FY23 NIKE, INC. IMPACT REPORT

GENERAL ASSESSMENT

Nike’s 2023 Impact Report shows that it supports its sustainability strategies with clear targets across both its operations and supply chain. Through SBTi-approved emissions-reduction targets, the company has committed to reducing Scope 1–2 emissions by 65% and Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030, while also setting a net-zero target for 2050. In this context, an absolute 69% GHG reduction in FY23 indicates notable progress in managing its carbon footprint. Water use at supplier facilities was reduced by 33% compared with 2017, while a 40% reduction in water intensity by 2025 was set as a target, reinforcing its focus on water management. In waste and circularity, Nike aims to divert 95% of waste from its operations and is taking concrete steps to recover textile waste in its supply chain through the “T-REX” initiative. As for product-level material sustainability, figures such as 99% recycled polyester and 100% sustainable cotton reflect a strong commitment to minimising material-related environmental impacts. LEED-certified retail spaces and facility investments focused on energy efficiency demonstrate notable efforts to improve the environmental performance of buildings. In governance, sustainability responsibility at executive-board level and linking compensation mechanisms to performance show that sustainability targets are being implemented seriously across the organisation. At the same time, the certification portfolio has yet to be extended across the organisation, and social-impact metrics need stronger quantitative targets; these stand out as areas for development in the coming period. Overall, Nike’s report demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and transparency, while leaving room to provide more detail on scaling and impact.
