OVERALL ASSESSMENT
Adidas's 2023 Annual Report shows that the company presents a strong sustainability framework at both operational and supply-chain levels. First, the company has set clear targets for 2025 and beyond, aiming to reduce its carbon footprint at every stage of the value chain, improve water and waste management, and increase material circularity. For example, it aims to reduce the 164,236 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions from its own operations (Scope 1 & 2) in 2023 by 90% by 2025, and projects a 30% reduction across the entire value chain by 2030; these targets are based on criteria approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). For water efficiency, water intensity in administrative offices and distribution centres was measured at 0.138 m³ per square metre in 2023, while supplier facilities achieved 33% water savings compared with 2017; the 2025 target is a 40% reduction in supplier water intensity. In waste management and circularity, the company is targeting a 95% waste-diversion rate in its own operations and continues efforts to scale the recovery of textile waste in the supply chain through initiatives such as Textile Recycling Excellence (T-REX) and Sorting for Circularity. It has reached 99% recycled polyester and 100% sustainable cotton in its material use, and produced more than 2 million shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic. In governance, the Chief Sustainability Officer reports directly to an Executive Board member, and the Sustainability Sponsor Board (SSB) tracks targets; since 2021, variable compensation for the Executive Board has also been tied to the performance of sustainable products. Retail employees receive comprehensive sustainability training through Green Ambassador training, while campaigns such as Move for the Planet encourage consumer participation. In addition, under the Adidas Decarbonization Manifesto, suppliers commit to ending coal use by 2025, switching to renewable energy and setting SBTi-approved targets. In 2023, 48 boiler conversions were carried out for suppliers, and renewable sources supplied 50% of the electricity needs of 35 facilities. Adidas has also documented its transparency and performance through high rankings from rating organisations such as CDP, MSCI ESG (AAA) and the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark. In summary, the 2023 Adidas report sets out concrete targets and progress in areas such as renewable-energy use, water and waste efficiency, circularity, material sustainability, and employee and supplier engagement. Supported by regular audits and third-party approval mechanisms, these efforts provide a clear roadmap for 2025 and beyond.
